Kal Bandalene Passed Away

April 21st, 2012 by

Dear Tamakwa Family,

It is with great sadness that we inform the Tamakwa community that Kal Bandalene died Friday morning at the age of 89.

Kal was Tamakwa’s iconic camp director over a period that spanned three decades: the 1950′s, 60s and 70s. He touched the lives of generations of campers and counselors as a role model and father figure.

Between his summer role as camp director and his off-season career as an elementary school principal in Michigan, Kal had a direct hand in the growth and development of thousands of young people.

He was the beloved husband of Ada – a Tamakwa legendary persona in her own right — and father of Linda, Stuart and Amy. Beyond his camp career, he became a beloved grandfather as well.

Kal was the dearest of friends and close confidant to Lou Handler, Tamakwa’s founding owner and Esta Handler Kraft, Lou’s sister and camp co-owner.

All who knew him have their own personal “Kal stories” and fond memories. To the directors who followed him, Kal was a mentor and inspiration.

He will be terribly missed and remembered forever on the shores of South Tea Lake and beyond.
